The Smart Client has been designed to offer a fusion of thin and fat client functionality. Thin Clients are used because they are, easy to configure, they are low maintenance and are seen as secure devices. However they are very limited in functionality, such as the installation of local applications and the peripheral devices that can be attached and that they can support. For example when there are requirements for the use of USB memory sticks, digital cameras, CD/DVD writers and mobile phone synchronisation thin clients typically cannot be used. This means that in most cases they do not fulfil all of the needs of the end user.
On the other hand PC's offer flexibility in terms of applications that can be installed and peripherals that can be attached locally to the computer, but controlling who is permitted to perform these operations is difficult, because of this PCs are seen as open and can be much less secure.
